cool !! i will be visiting Swedish Institute from 9-16 March 2008.

I have a question.
Adding on to having "embassy", the "House of Sweden", in Second Life, an Internet-based virtual world, what other innovative ideas do you see suitable areas for exploration in the educational purposes? What are the challenges faced? Do you see this being integrated into mainstream formal education?

The future of schools lies in the implementation of digital learning in order to create a flexible learning environment. The desirable direction is therefore helping schools to develop new pedagogical strategies made possible by net-based learning. In general, educational systems will become more open and allow different learning strategies. This means that education will be more accessible which is crucial for social and economic development. In Sweden’s decentralised system the decisions are taken by politicians and local authorities and they are the ones who have to be convinced about the benefits of implementing digital learning.

Picking up on the last two comments. I totally agree with David: yes, decision-makers seldomly use the systems they buy! They have their secretaries to print their important emails....
If I try to analyze why decisions are made the way they are made, there is one other thing that comes to mind: the ignorance most of these decision makers have regarding open standards, open source, social networking and the like. And yes, then you get these guerilla tactics from individual departments. Wouldn't it be great that top-down decisions and bottom-up experiments meet somewhere in the middle?

QUality in online education is basiclly the same as in F2F education. There are allthough some major challanges that has to be accounted fore.
First the competence of the assessors.
Second the constantly changing virtual ewnvironments. Quality aspect of a standard LMS is not the same as for education in a MMORPG or 3D world.
Thirdly the provider has to be aware of the physical settings for localities not provided by themselves (eg. leaqrning centres, student homes). There has been quite extensive attempts to come up with benchmarks/criterias fro online education see: http://www.eadtu.nl/e-xcellenceqs/ and http://www.acode.edu.au/aboutus/acodebenchmkwksp/default.htm.
In Sweden there will soon be a survey on international research and benchmarking of online learning in higher education published available at www.hsv.se
